Recently one of the students I was working with decided to join the reserve unit in Lethbridge. Local staff were happy to have the student come and watch their weekly meeting and explain the process of involvment over the phone. We gathered the following details:
- An application to join the reserves can take 6 to 9 months to process at the Calgary office - so don't count on immediate engagement
- Two reserve units exist close by, the Recon unit in Medicine Hat and the Artillery unit in Lethbridge.
- Reservists do collect pay for the hours they contribute to the unit and they receive a wide variety of training
- Applications need to be completed on line at www.forces.ca (this process is not completely clear as the reserve application seems to be the same as the regular force application complete with questions that do not apply to reservists.
- Students for the most part need a parent or guardian's signature to apply
