Reserve Units in Southern Alberta
Recently one of the students I was working with decided to join the reserve unit in Lethbridge. Local staff were happy to have the student come and watch their weekly meeting and explain the process of involvement over the phone. We gathered the following details:
See www.forces.ca for more information or call the Lethbridge unit at 403-317-2370 to speak with part time staff.
Full time applications for the Canadian Forces can be found on forces.ca
- An application to join the reserves can take 6 to 9 months to process at the Calgary office - so don't count on immediate engagement
- Two reserve units exist close by, the Recon unit in Medicine Hat and the Artillery unit in Lethbridge, but Lethbridge recently added other divisions.
- Reservists do collect pay for the hours they contribute to the unit and they receive a wide variety of training
- Applications need to be completed on line at www.forces.ca (this process is not completely clear as the reserve application seems to be the same as the regular force application complete with questions that do not apply to reservists).
- Students often need a parent or guardian's signature to apply
See www.forces.ca for more information or call the Lethbridge unit at 403-317-2370 to speak with part time staff.

Navy Experience Program
Students can apply to work for the Navy for one year. During this year they receive training and then are assigned to a ship where they will job shadow many of the crew members and will take part in any cruises. This is a paid position and at the end of the year you will be offered employment options or you can choose to end your time with the Navy.
