What is a Social Worker?
Flex on Friday, March 21 in the Career Corner at Myers High
Armed with a quality Myers education and a desire to be a counsellor, Mackina started university in the Bachelor of Psychology program. Her first experience in university was difficult, and she ultimately decided to take a year and a half off before returning. During this second attempt Mackina was better prepared and determined and found success in her studies. After her first successful years she applied to and was accepted into the University of Calgary Social Work Bachelor’s Degree housed at the University of Lethbridge.
Mackina is now finishing her final practicum and interviewing for full time Social Work positions, primarily in the Mental Health Counselling field. She has already gained experience working in several fields through part-time employment, volunteering, and practicum placements. Mackina offers tips, tricks, and ideas for prospective counsellors navigating their options in university and the work world.

Early Childhood EducationIntroducing Tina Wolf, Director of KidZone in Taber
Tina graduated from our TMS program and has gone on to earn her Level 1, 2 and 3 certification in ECE or Early Childhood Education. Work You Can Love Tina's work day is busy, but also fun and she not only enjoys the children she cares for but the staff she works with as well. This is not to suggest her day is all fun and games, and we developed an understanding of how the trained ECE workers educate and guide children at a key time in their development. Creative and Subsidized Training Staff at KidZone have found great training opportunities including either in person training at Lethbridge Poly or online training at Portage College. Additionally, the Government of Alberta funds a free online course that will qualify an Alberta resident, 16 years of age or older as a Level 1 ECE worker. This course and information about certification can be found here. Enhanced Wages While reduced costs for training are attractive so are the wage subsidies running from $2.64 (level 1), $5.05 (level 2) to 8.62 per hour for Level 3 certified workers. Opportunity Tina mentioned there is growing demand for certified workers in Daycares but also in Day Homes, where a parent can run an ECE program in their own home. Tina emailed me a copy of her presentation and it is attached below.
