Career Resources for Students Finding Career Options
Activity 1 - Look ThroughThe 5 Common Career Directions
Explore some of these broad directions to see if you have a preference for one direction or another. While looking through the options common in each of the Five Common Directions you may feel attracted to one option of another and you can explore related opportunities.
Activity 2 - Define the Basics
Before you start taking online quizzes offering algorithmic wisdom, you should talk with someone about your strengths and preferences. It is helpful to have these conversations with people who know you well but are not interested in steering you in a pre-determined direction. We suggest you ask your parents, career person or another mentor to help you make a list of your Skills, Abilities. Values and Lifestyle Choices that you are keen on. Next meet with a Career Practitioner and define your thoughts about your strengths but also about career options. Just email Garth or Sharla below to book a time.
If you want to do this step all on your own below find a workbook used by the Government of Manitoba or substitute ALIS for some of their suggested websites.

Activity 3 - Take a Good Career Assessment
Not all assessments are good and some of the online products are created to primarily get your personal information. To make your search for an online assessment easier I have some buttons below that are linked to good assessments.
If you are unsure how this assessment works drop in to see a career practitioner

ALIS is an enormous site with great information but it is easy to get lost, don't be afraid to pop in to the career office and ask for help. I recommend the Interest assessment to start.

Activity 4 - Career Assessments with a Career Practitioner
This assessment is completed with the help of a Career Practitioner who has complete training in assessments and it is free to Horizon School Division students. Email Garth at [email protected] and he will send Horizon School Division students a link. After the assessment is completed the practitioner will go over the report with the student.
In the past Lethbridge College has offered the Strong Interest Inventory and other assessments to high school students. Usually there was a $15.00 fee and students would attend two sessions at the college. It is possible that this service will continue and you could call the number listed at the above linked page.
Activity 5 - Explore your strengths with Holland Codes
Holland developed his World of Work map many years ago and it has helped many people find areas of the workforce they would like to work in. Most of the Holland assessments are a bit tedious and you have to concentrate to learn about the six different preferences. I choose this video to help because the acting is great fun to watch and it is easy to understand the different preference groups. Below are two videos that will help you get started and Garth has a worksheet to help you decide on your preference area.
Activity 6 - Watch some of these great videos that answer some key questions about making your career happen.
How to Make Smart Career Decisions offers advice from an expert on arranging your career from a winning perspective.
Below watch a video on the new reality of our work world. In the old order, life was planned out and you just took the prescribed steps to achieve your career. This video shows you a different, potentially inspirational way to think about your progress.
Just don't have the energy to get going on your career plans? If this video is correct the act of creating something may well give you that energy.
Learning Clicks is an Alberta Government service that helps students with their transition from High School. This video tells the story of a graduate who finds the experience of moving on to be overwhelming and not at all exciting and then we see how he resolves this issue. Great video and just over 2 minutes long.
